Description:

SOLAS is the states training agency and has a number of purpose built facilities throughout Ireland. In 2007 they took the decision to redevelop their existing facility in Tallaght. The redevelopment was designed and constructed to ensure the existing centre remained fully operational during the redevelopment. On completion the original centre was decanted, demolished and replaced with car parking and landscaping.

The new building is a five storey multi-purpose training facility including workshop, administration areas, canteen & kitchen areas with a total space of 10,125m2. The building comprises a structural steel frame on a mixture of piles and traditional foundations, RC concrete cores, external metal cladding, GRP panels, curtain walling and associated cladding.

The five-storey classroom and administration block is located to the front of the site and is aligned with the site boundary. The workshops are located in two parallel blocks to the rear. A central block between the workshops contains classrooms, stores and plant areas. All these elements are linked by a linear atrium space, which provides a clear primary route through the building. The five-storey classroom block is clad in blue Terracotta and engineered for a further two additional floors.
