In Walls we recognise that our corporate social responsibility is an integral part of our Company’s reputation. We believe that a first priority is our local community, both in the environs of our head office building in Dublin and our Munster Region office based in Cork. Therefore, we commit time and resources and encourage our employees to become involved in local organizations and charitable initiatives, such as the North side Partnership agency, a local employment support group based in Dublin 17. In 2015, in partnership with the CIF and other member firms, we committed significant resources to refurbishing 12 apartments for the Peter McVerry Trust, ensuring some respite for the homeless in Dublin City Centre.
The Company also supports a number of fundraising initiatives throughout the year and matches contributions to support various causes, including an annual table quiz where we invite clients, design teams and other third parties to test their general knowledge with our employees, with the proceeds on the night and a generous Company contribution going to a worthwhile charitable cause. It goes without saying that our day to day business activities are discharged in a socially responsible manner, behaving ethically and responsibly in the localities where we work and in so doing complying with local authority best practice and guidelines, local and national legislation and any regulations that apply to the construction sector.
Career LEAP (Local Employment Action Partnership) is a pioneering youth work-readiness programme developed by Trinity College for at-risk young adults in Dublin’s north inner city. Delivered in conjunction with East Wall Youth, Swan Youth Services and businesses in the docklands and city centre area, it helps build personal, social, emotional and cognitive skills to develop career identity and work-readiness.
Walls is involved in Career LEAP since its beginnings in 2016 which includes membership of the Career Leap steering committee and Business Partners Advisory Board. At a practical level we deliver a training module on interview skills preparation. We also get involved in a key aspect of Career Leap, which is the work experience placement, usually on our construction projects based in the locality, which includes a mentoring programme that matches Walls site management personnel and participants and a mentoring workshop.
Dragons at the Docks is a charity fundraiser that began in 2017 and is organised by the Irish property industry. Although cancelled last year due to COVID, in previous years the team from Walls was amongst over 1,000 participants with the event raising over €1m to date for its main charity the Dublin Simon Community, to support the most vulnerable people living in very difficult circumstances, along with other national and local charities in the Grand Canal Docks area.
Each team comprises 12 participants and the competition is fierce! The organisers are hopeful that the 2021 event will go ahead in early September and we are hopeful that our team will be properly prepared and do us proud!
Walls Construction are proud to sponsor the UCD Champions ‘Opening Doors’ Alumni Fund. This fund aims to provide scholarships to students from disadvantaged and challenging backgrounds that have shown great determination and drive to succeed despite the barriers that were put in their way. Supporting these students is more important than ever before, as recent years have seen rental prices and cost of living in Dublin soar. The receiving students are often the first in their family to attend third level education and they are creating an important domino effect in their local communities by encouraging others to go to third level.
